Privacy Policy
How Bell Resident handles personal information. This notice is for readers in the United Kingdom.
Who we are
Bell Resident is published by AGB READING 2020 LIMITED, company number 08971639. The registered office, and the address of the controller, is Maria House, 35 Millers Road, Brighton BN1 5NP, United Kingdom. For privacy questions write only to info@bellresident.com or support@bellresident.com.
What we collect
You can read the stories without an account. If you create one, we ask for your name, email address, and a password. The password is stored only in this browser.
If you take Bell Resident Plus, the checkout asks for your name, email, phone number, street, house number, postcode, city, billing address, and an optional comment. The payment itself is taken by PayPal. PayPal receives the payment details needed to complete a one-time charge of £9.99. We do not receive or store your card number. We keep a record on this device that the account is Plus or Free.
Newsletter topic choices use the name and email on the account. They are not a separate list on a server. Changing them updates a flag in this browser.
If you email the newsroom, we receive whatever you choose to send, and we use it to reply.
Cookies and local storage
These pages do not set advertising cookies and do not run an analytics tracker. A cookie is a small file a site can leave in the browser. We do not use cookies to follow you from site to site.
We do use local storage, which is a place in your browser for data that stays after you close the tab. On this site it holds the account (name, email, password), whether you are logged in, whether the plan is Free or Plus, newsletter topics, saved articles, and the cookie and personalised-ads choices. Clearing the site data in the browser deletes it. We cannot see that store from our office.
Why we use it
- To let you log in and see your name on this device.
- To take a one-time Bell Resident Plus payment through PayPal and show the plan status.
- To send, or to stop, the briefing you asked for.
- To answer a letter to the newsroom and to keep a correction straight.
Legal basis
Under the UK GDPR we rely on these bases:
- Contract: creating an account, and taking the one-time Bell Resident Plus plan you order, so we can do what you asked.
- Consent: the briefing, and the box you tick to agree to this policy when you register. You can withdraw consent by logging out, unsubscribing, or clearing the browser data, and by writing to us.
- Legitimate interests: answering editorial email and keeping a short record of a correction. That interest is running a newspaper. It does not override your rights.
Your rights
If you are in the United Kingdom you can ask for a copy of personal information we hold, ask us to correct it, ask us to delete it, ask us to restrict how we use it, and ask for it in a portable form where that applies. You can object to processing based on legitimate interests. Where we rely on consent, you can withdraw it at any time. You can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office, Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire, SK9 5AF, at ico.org.uk.
Most of the account and plan data is in your browser, not on our servers. We will still answer a request about any email you have sent us.
How long we keep it
Account, plan, and briefing flags stay in local storage until you remove them or clear the browser. Email you send us is kept while we need it to reply, to handle a correction, or to meet a legal duty, and then deleted. PayPal keeps payment records under its own policy for as long as it must.
